After a long, hard year of UMTYMP, it’s finally over. It was actually over a few weeks ago. I had the whole month of May UMTYMP-less freedom. Anyway, I just got my grade, and I have an A+!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A+’s are really hard to get, and I get mostly A’s. To get an A+ you have to have 95% and above. Tests and homework are 40% of your grade, and Quizzes and participation are 10%. My test average was 100/100 flat (There’s 110 possible, but 10 points are bonus points), my homework average was 43.4/45, my Quiz average was 9.3/10, and my participation was 10/10. If you calculate, I got a 97.9 overall percentage. Also, my teacher wrote, “Mitchell has mastered the concepts of Pre-Calc and is well prepared for calculus.” Also, I took a UMTYMP Calculus Entrance Exam recently, and I got 45/50, which is also good. I pass to get into calculus. If you get a lot wrong in a particular subject, they send homework home to be done over the summer in order to get into calculus. I got such a good score, they didn’t have any homework for me! So next year I begin college calculus. I’m also considered a student of the U of M, so I also get an official U of M ID card. It grants me access to all the U of M libraries. My dad was hoping we could get access to recreation facilities, which would be cool.
UMTYMP is finished!
A lot has happened the last few days and I haven’t the time to post about it. Now it’s MEA vacation and I have time. First of all, last Thursday, I took my first UMTYMP test for geometry. It was a piece of cake. Then this Tuesday I got it back, and I got a 109/110!!! That’s nearly perfect! If I had only gotten this one step on a proof right, I would’ve had 100%. The next thing that happened is that my family celebrated my mom’s birth day on Saturday. We went to Minnehaha Falls, Hong Kong Noodle (the best Chinese restaurant ever), and a Gopher Volleyball game. It was really fun. The third thing that happened was that I finally got a cell phone! It’s a red Samsung A437 and it rocks. I got an AT&T Pay as You Go plan where it’s 25 cents per minute and you pay as you call.
The Elevator that Broke Down on Thursday
Something really scary just happened on Thursday. That day I had UMTYMP after school at the U of M Campus. Well, during the halfway break of the lesson, my friends and I decided to go to the vending machines in the basement of the building. We decided to take the elevator because it might be faster. The building was very old and so was the elevator, which I should have known. Anyways, I pressed the basement button and we started descending. Then, all of a sudden, unexpectantly, scarily, the elevator light stopped at the 2nd level! The people in the elevator started panicking. I didn’t know if we were stuck a bit above or below level 2. I pushed all the buttons, but they didn’t work. We were just about scared enough to press the alarm button that I always thought was useless when this other kid started prying the door open! He actually got it half open and we discovered that we were just about a foot below level 2. We jumped out like it was a jail cell and just left it there. I think it might be still broken. They should update the whole building.
